I have a Linksys router giving my house wifi right now. If I were to buy a netgear wireless router, could i set it up in a nearby room to receive that wifi and then run an ethernet cord from the netgear to an xbox 360 for xbox live?|||Depends.
On most devices with stock firmware, no.
If you get a router which supports DD-WRT, you can load that firmware and put the router in "client" mode, which will do exactly what you have described above.
