Linksys router?

When I bought this linksys router model wrt54g I thought That you can hook the router with the modem and put it anywhere your house and I was gonna put it in the basement but this kind of router has to connect to my computer. Why is that|||Linksy is a router designed to transmit your internet signal from one computer to the next.,that must not be the case since your asking this question...(.i am trying to understand that you must want ANOTHER desk top to receive the internet in your home)-If you bought this with the intentions of just receiving the internet-then all you had to do was buy a wireless card to insert into your tower and hope that someone in your area has a Linksy in THIER home you can pick up...you might have bought a Linksy for nothing...|||why would you want to put the router in the basement, youre not gonna get a good signal from there, wireless router performs and gives better signal when they are positioned on a higher level or floor of the house. If your host pc will be in the basement too, then youre not gonna have a problem with the signal, but other computers in the house located on higher floors may have difficulty getting signal from the router in the basement.

I have that exact same router and three computers are connected to it wirelessly. my desktop pc is the host pc, then my nephew's computer who is next to my room is also connected wirelessly and getting excellent signal, and my niece who's room is in the garrage have a laptop and also connects to my router wirelessly but she can only get 2 bars of signal which is still good. our house is just one floor.|||If you wan't to avoid having to use a cable between your PC and router you will need to buy a wireless device for your PC. They make PCI (cheaper/better) and USB (easier to install) and they don't cost that much (%26lt;$20 at tigerdirect.com).

Right now your situation is like having a base for a cordless phone without the phone.
