How to know if there is a virus on a Linksys wireless router and how to format a Linksys wireless router?

I recently bought a Linksys router that I'm pretty sure is better than my current D-Link router. I bought the Linksys one used from somebody. How can I find out if it has a virus and how can I format it to be sure?|||Viruses don't infect a piece of hardware like a router. They only get in the files and hard drive of a computer. Call Linksys at 1-800-326-7114 and get a technician to help you. Help is free, just ask them.|||Upgrade the firmware for your specific version. Upgrading the firmware will erase the current software and restore it to linksys factory defaults.

Look for your model e.g. WRT54G Rev 8, make absolutely sure you have the right firmware before upgrading.|||Go to this site: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

Read all about what it's about. Then decide if u want to try it out. U can get a lot more functionality out of your router with DD-WRT firmware. Also more range from your router.

Best of all it's free and has awesome tutorials on how to get stuff to work.|||I think your fine. I don't know of any viruses that infect routers, nor a way to format them.|||Your router is fine. Hold the reset pin in for 30 seconds to reset it to its defaults.|||Highly doubtful that there is a virus on the router

You want to reset the router to set it back to factory defaults- it may have the previous person's settings

They may be set up for dsl with a password et al

You may be on cable broadband or have a diffirerent dsl account

Simply plug in the router

Use a pin to hold in the button on the back

Hold for 20 seconds

Let the lights start flashing and voila

By the way most routers are fine

If its a really old router - it may be a slower b rather than a somewhat faster g model

Still it will most likely be way faster than your internet connection

The most important thing is first of all to change the channel from the standard channel 6 setting

Change to channel 1 or 11 as first picks

Make sure the router is high and not cluttered

Basements are not a good place for the router install (unless you do all of your wireless computing in the basement

You can check for neighbors signals drifting in and causing interference with netstumbler

Netstumbler is a scanning utility. It is more sensitive and will tell you more than the windows wireless utility which is next to useless and will not even tell you the channels of wireless signals

Here is how to enter the control panel of your linksys router

http://www.tech-faq.com/setup-linksys-ro鈥?/a>

basically you type 192.168.1.1 into your browser

the account is admin , the password will be admin and blank ( after reset to factory defaults)

If you are not sure then go to linksys.com and check the manual online

The best routers are the older Linksys WRT54G

that is the older models

You can apply third party firmware to give advanced features

check out Linksys info org

Here are some third party firmware choices:

Tomato is good and free , and has a good following

among the standards is a product Sweasoft:

Lets hope that your Linksys router works , is better than sewage and is not bricked
